NH drivers, have a care

I’ve been following this thread on the Chronicle of the Horse’s forums, and the more I read the more upset I get.

More and more each day, it seems that a few select drivers are all too willing to run over anyone from pedestrians, runners, people walking their dogs, to sideswiping bikers, to out and out threatening people on horseback. Those drivers must think they are impervious to harm within the confines of their weapon of choice vehicle, but they’ve probably never experienced the horror of having a 1,000 pound, adrenaline-filled animal come at them through their windshield, either.

TITLE XXI
MOTOR VEHICLES
CHAPTER 265
RULES OF THE ROAD
Special Rules
Section 265:104
265:104 Approaching Horses. – Every person having control or charge of a vehicle shall, whenever upon any way and approaching any horse, drive, manage, and control such vehicle in such a manner as to exercise every reasonable precaution to prevent the frightening of such horse, and to insure the safety and protection of any person riding or driving the same.

So remember, in New Hampshire, the next time you’re behind the wheel and decide to menace people on horseback, we WILL take down your plate number, we WILL report it to the police and you WILL get a pleasant little visit from your local Officer Friendly who WILL remind you of the rules of the road.

Trust me, it happens. You can’t run over a horse any easier than you can drive through a moose.
