Snow and ice patches

Was supposed to have a lesson, but spent too much time doing fence repair and yard work, so another student and I went out for a hack instead. Our trainer had to rush off and design the course for the T-School 2 phase.

We hacked out past the back pasture and headed towards the bridge at a walk. There was still a lot of snow and ice patches on the trail, so we kept to a walk, instead of the trot intervals we were hoping to do. Fortunately, the track was all clear but for some mud after the bridge, so we managed to get some trot work in. Clover wanted to canter, but I held her to the trot and cantered only briefly to catch up with Margaret and Ollie.

I'm trying to get the perfect balance between half-halts to prevent Clover from breaking into the canter, and still managing to keep her at a forward trot. It's hard because she gets all frustrated at being held to the trot, and shortens up her stride.

It was still a pleasant enough ride, lots of walking and chatting. Someone set up a huge canvas teepee in the woods on one side of the river.
